By saying Africa, we automatically imagine jungles, desert, prairies, lions, elephants, zebras and gorillas and the rest from that package of animals, which are associated with the African continent. But imagine walking through all that and coming across an Internet cafe right in the jungle. Surely you will not be much surprised because these cafes are everywhere in Uganda and in Africa these days. The cafes usually combine several services, apart from Internet, they offer some cold drinks and snacks, are a place to meet friends and chat, and also to make cheap international calls. In fact, the cheapest international calls can be found in these Internet cafes. And all because of the fierce competition going on currently in Uganda.
In old good times only too operators in Uganda were allowed to sell VoIP services. They were national operators and had the monopoly on all VoIP services given by the Ugandan Communications Commission (UCC), the body, which monitors, inspects and regulates communications in Uganda. These two companies were competing with each other each decreasing the prices after another, before making international calls came close to being free. However, free international calls were never offered, instead UCC decided to allow other smaller companies to offer VoIP services in Uganda. The major Telecom companies were not that happy about this news because they were losing profit. But they could nothing because, with the spreading of the mobile industry and Internet, Ugandans understood that it is cheaper to use VoIP services for making cheap international calls or using international callback service.Cheap international calls to Uganda
Cheap international call business flourishes in Uganda with unprecedented temps. The thing is that practically all Internet providers and Internet cafe owners offer VoIP to their clients. However, the majority of these services are, in fact, illegal because cafes do not want state bodies to discover they are engaged in something not registered legally. Besides, there is no complete law in Uganda, which regulates the provision and quality standards for VoIP services.
To get more and more clients and to find their place in the profitable business of cheap international calls, many new businesses compromise quality against price. UCC, therefore, is under constant pressure from the Ugandan Government to control both the illegal service providers and their quality. UCC has recently revoked licenses of 24 Internet operators, who were offering also VoIP services, because of the quality and personal information safety issues. The latter is also closely connected with the unreliable and non-professional VoIP applications, which abound in Uganda and are another important issue to deal with for UCC.
