is a Central African state with population of 22 million with English
and French as official languages. Once a French colony, it is only

Mobile penetration rate in Cameroon
The country, which is the homeland of the famous football player Eto’o, who himself established a Telecom company in Cameroon, surprisingly, stays behind as to mobile coverage to such African countries as Botswana (75 percent coverage), Mauritius (74 percent), Ivory Coast (46) and Nigeria (42). Statistics show that mobile rate penetration in Cameroon was only 36 percent as of last year. The number takes into consideration only the registered SIM cards, so obviously this is not the limit. At the same time the need of cheap calls to Cameroon and from is ever growing.
The following can be a vivid example of how mobile technology changes the lives of Cameroonians. Taking into consideration the situation of the antenatal care of pregnant women, an automated SMS service was initiated, which sends regular SMS messages to pregnant women reminding them of the need to visit their doctors for checkup or taking prescribed medication. This is how the Midwife Christina Ngwa explains the service: “We noticed that there were more mobile phones in rural areas than TV sets and so we decided to use mobile phones to educate pregnant women on when to come for antenatal care, and also tell them why they should come for antenatal care, and also alert mothers with babies on when to bring their babies for the next vaccination session.”
Anyway, just recently Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (TRA) of Cameroon granted a Vietnam telecom company Viettel a license to provide 3G web services. This will be the first 3G provider in the country. At the same time TRA has dispelled rumors that Eto’o's company used third party connections to get the license of the third mobile operator in the country. Apparently the fame of Eto’o is not enough for being a Telecom provider in Cameroon. As an answer to this Eto’o Telecom has stated, that last year it has sold around 50.000 SIM cards in the country.
